Historic cemeteries are found throughout the rural Memphis area. You won’t find any ghosts here, but you will find good examples of cemetery art, arboretums, and community history, all just a day trip from Memphis!

Old Trinity Episcopal Church and Cemetery

Also known as Trinity in the Field, this chapel is the oldest in Tipton County. The church was built in 1847 by he enslaved laborers of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Taylor. Learn more.

Somerville Cemetery

Although the entrance says the cemetery was established in 1838, it was actually established in 1829. Learn more.

Established in 1881, the original chapel was destroyed by a storm in 1928. In 2017 a church replica was built as an open air building utilizing the original window frames from 1800. Today it is used for weddings, teas and prayer services. Learn more.

Canfield Cemetery

This historic African American cemetery was organized in 1893 and is the final resting place of Louis Napoleon Nelson is buried here. Learn more.

Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church

Constructed around 1854, the church exhibits Gothic Revival and Greek Revival influences. Learn more.
